The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka says that due to a cyber attack targeting the e-mail addresses of government offices, the data of many government institutions has been lost. Due to this cyber attack, the information of about 5,000 e-mail addresses of 300 government offices inclooding cabinet office, has been lost.
Its CEO Mahesh Perera stated that this cyber attack was carried out between the 17th of May and the 26th of August.
He says that the ICT Institute has provided email facility to several organizations that do not have central email facilities, and that the email system which was installed in 2013 has become outdated and its security applications have been damaged.
With the cyber attack on August 26, the system was out of service. After 2014 there has been no update till now. Its Chief Executive Officer Mahesh Perera said that the ICT Institute is working on the necessary updating and administrative work to prevent this from happening in the future.
