A source in the Ministry of Technology said that due to the high cost , the commercially launching 5G technology, is to be delayed further.

Although the auction for 5G spectrum is yet to be completed, the government and telecom operators are committed to commercial launch of 5G technology, the sources said.

Building the necessary infrastructure across the country requires significant investment. And since the cost of 5G-compatible devices and data plans may be high initially for many users, Sri Lanka's economy can benefit by attracting investment, fostering innovation and increasing digital access.

While Sri Lanka's 5G technology is still in its infancy, Sri Lanka became the first South Asian country to successfully trial a 5G network.

Last year Dialog Axiata and Mobitel conducted limited scale 5G trials in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna, Anuradhapura and Galle.
