Sajith Premadasa should be the leader of the alliance formed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the United National Party, said Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya Secretary and Member of Parliament Chamindrani Kiriella.
She said this while addressing the media.
She further said the following.
"The initial discussions for the merger of the two parties are currently underway successfully. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is largely acting as an advisor. The two parties are currently coming together at the grassroots level. The top leadership will come together at the right time.
Recently, former UNP MPs and ministers attended the birthday celebration of the opposition leader. That is a good start. Our position is that Sajith Premadasa, who is serving as the opposition leader, should be given the leadership of this emerging alliance. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had stated that he has no intention of engaging in active politics. The country is demanding a young leadership at this time. If the provincial council elections are held in the future, these two parties will contest together."
