The clash between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison has been brought under control, said Prisons media Spokesperson and Prisons Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake. He further said that 36 inmates were injured in the clash and admitted to hospital, of which two have died.

He also said that three more inmates have been transferred to the Pallansena camp after receiving treatment.

"As of today, 2,417 inmates are being held in the Negombo Prison. Prison officials have intervened and the situation inside has now been completely resolved. Prison inmates also provided assistance to control the situation. In addition, the police, Special Task Force and the army were also involved to tighten security outside the prison. Although there was a tense situation in the inmates' section, the officers took steps to control it," the prison media spokesperson said.

The Prisons Commissioner has appointed a special investigation team to investigate the incident. It is also reported that some of the demands of the inmates and detainees are also to be granted.
