The Karnataka government in India has granted one day of paid leave per month to women. This is to ensure the convenience of women during their monthly periods.

Accordingly, it is mandatory for all institutions in Karnataka, both public and private, where women are employed, to provide 12 days of paid leave per year to women. This law will come into effect from October 9.

The Karnataka cabinet's approval of the Karnataka Menstrual Leave Policy 2025 shows the state government's commitment to women's health and Indian media points out that it will soon be followed by other states.

With this decision, Karnataka becomes the first state to cover both the government and private sectors with its 'menstrual leave' policy. Odisha and Bihar have already provided one-day menstrual leave to government employees. A similar policy is in place in Kerala's universities.
