Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who arrived at the Commission for the Prevention of Bribery or Corruption this morning to give a statement, left it a few moments ago.

He appeared before the Commission at around 9.30 this morning following a notice from the Commission to give a statement regarding the alleged bribe of US$ 2 million paid to SriLankan Airlines in 2013 when purchasing aircraft.

Mahinda Rajapaksa gave statements before the Commission for more than 2 hours, at which time former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and many party members arrived at the scene and expressed support for the former President.

The then CEO of SriLankan Airlines, Kapila Chandrasena, and his wife, Neomali Wijenayake, were accused of accepting a bribe of US$2 million in 2013 when SriLankan Airlines purchased six Airbus A-330 aircraft and eight A-350 aircraft.

The former CEO, Kapila Chandrasena, was later arrested and released on bail but died under suspicious circumstances a few days ago.

This was confirmed in a case heard before a British court regarding the allegation that Airbus was paying bribes in the sale of its aircraft. Accordingly, it was revealed in that case that Airbus had paid bribes to 20 countries, including Sri Lanka.
